Which Sage?

“Sage” covers several products. Sage Accounting (the cloud product for small businesses) can import bank transactions from files such as CSV, OFX and QIF, and lets you match the columns of a CSV to its own fields. Sage 50 (desktop) has its own bank import routes, which vary by version. This page focuses on Sage Accounting; for Sage 50, check Sage’s help for your version.

Which export to use

Sage Accounting’s import can work with either a single amount column or separate money in and money out columns, depending on how you map it. Both converter exports work:

Steps

  1. Convert the statementChoose the PDF above and check it says “Verified”.
  2. Download a CSVThe CSV for Excel or the QuickBooks CSV, as above.
  3. Open the bank account in SageGo to Banking and select the account the statement belongs to.
  4. Import the fileChoose the option to import transactions or a statement, select the CSV, and match each column to Sage’s fields. Choose dd/mm/yyyy dates.
  5. Review and reconcileCheck the imported transactions, then reconcile against the statement’s closing balance.

Sage’s menus and import options change between versions. If something doesn’t match, search Sage’s help for “import bank transactions”.

Year-end catch-up

If you’re bringing a year into Sage from PDF statements, use “Several statements” first. The whole-year check makes sure no month is missing, that duplicate downloads are only counted once and that each statement’s opening balance follows on from the last, so the bank reconciliation in Sage comes out right at year end.
