HSBC UK statements are one of the layouts StatementToCSV has been tested on with real statements. They have a few habits that trip up simple converters: the date is printed only once per day, the balance usually appears only on the last transaction of each day, and every line carries a short payment-type code. The converter handles all three and checks the result against HSBC’s own balances.

How to download your HSBC statement as a PDF

  1. Log on to HSBC online banking on a computer (the website gives the most control over dates).
  2. Select the account, then look for Statements (sometimes shown as View statements).
  3. Choose the statement period and download it as a PDF. Download each month you need separately.
  4. In the HSBC UK app, statements are usually under the account’s menu as Statements or Documents, where you can share or save the PDF.

Very old statements may not be available online. HSBC can send copies of older statements on request, but paper copies would need scanning, which the converter can’t read yet.

Menu names change from time to time and can differ between the app and the website. If you can’t find statements, search for “statements” in the app or online banking help.

What a HSBC statement looks like

A typical HSBC UK statement has the columns Date, Payment type and details, Paid out, Paid in and Balance. The payment type is a short code in front of the description, such as DD (direct debit), SO (standing order), BP (bill payment), CR (credit), VIS (Visa card payment) or ATM. Codes are kept in the description so you can filter by them later.

Which export to choose

For your own records or a mortgage application, use the CSV for Excel. HSBC business customers using Xero should choose the Xero CSV, and QuickBooks users the QuickBooks CSV. All three come from the same checked rows.

Common issues with HSBC statements

Support status: tested

We have converted real HSBC statements and checked every row against their printed balances. Banks change their statement designs from time to time, so each conversion is still checked: if a future HSBC layout doesn’t read correctly, the balance check will show it, and the “Help us support this layout” button lets you send us an anonymised report.

StatementToCSV is independent and not affiliated with or endorsed by HSBC. The name is used only to describe the statements the converter reads.

Questions people ask

Does StatementToCSV work with HSBC statements?

Yes. HSBC UK statements are one of the three layouts tested on real statements. Every converted HSBC statement is still checked against its own balances, so you’ll see if anything doesn’t add up.

Why do some HSBC rows have no balance in the CSV?

HSBC prints a balance only at the end of each day, so the CSV leaves the balance blank on the earlier rows of the same day rather than inventing one.

Can I convert HSBC business account statements?

Yes, as long as the statement uses the same column layout. Business statements we haven’t seen yet can be reported with the layout-report button in the converter.
