How to get old bank statements in the UK
Online banking shows only a limited history. For older months, you’ll need to ask the bank, and it helps to ask for the right thing.
Common reasons to need older statements: catching up several years of accounts, an HMRC enquiry, a mortgage or visa application, a dispute, or a missing month in a year-end set.
Step by step
- Check online banking firstLook as far back as the statements area allows. Some banks keep several years online; download everything available.
- Request copies from the bankUse secure messaging in online banking, phone, or a branch. Ask for statement copies for specific dates and accounts.
- Ask for electronic copiesAsk for PDF statements rather than paper if the bank offers it. Paper copies would need scanning, which can’t be converted to CSV yet.
- For closed accountsContact the bank with the sort code and account number if you have them. Banks typically keep records for several years after an account closes.
- If you need personal data the bank won’t otherwise provideYou can make a subject access request under UK data protection law for the personal data the bank holds about you. The bank must normally respond within one month.
- Check the set when it arrivesUse the whole-year check to make sure the copies cover every month you asked for.
Fees
Some banks charge for copies of older statements, especially paper ones, and others don’t. Ask before you request a large number. Subject access requests are normally free.
For accountants
If a client has gaps, find exactly which periods are missing first (see checking for missing months), so the client can ask the bank for specific dates rather than “everything”.
Ask for the format you need
Say what the statements are for. A lender may want copies on headed paper or stamped by a branch; an accountant converting them to a spreadsheet needs electronic PDFs. Asking for the right thing first time avoids a second request and a second wait.
Keep them once you have them
Save every statement you download into one folder per account and year, and back it up. It saves repeating this exercise for the next tax return or application.
